I find that so many ‘older celebrities’ (or should that be ‘celebrity old women’) use negativity about age and ageing as a way of being (so they think) witty in their columns. As I mostly read the Guardian so my scrutiny falls on their regular columnists but please give me examples of others that you have some across.
The latest one to make my hackles rise is Joan Bakewell who, in an otherwise very useful piece on fitness in old age (Fit for my age Guardian 06.02.07) states ‘Getting old is punishment enough. . .’
What exactly is she being punished for? Living so long? It’s glib and it’s damaging but I assume she thought it was clever.
What do you think?
